I graduated from the Koninklijke Academie (Royal Academy) in The Hague in 1985. Before pursuing my artistic education, I trained as a technical engineer—a practical decision encouraged by my parents, who were concerned that the arts wouldn't provide financial stability.
During that era, only a select few artists could sustain themselves solely through their creative work. Like many of my peers, I balanced art with other employment to make a living. However, I continued creating on a smaller scale, and in recent years, I've been able to dedicate more time to developing my artistic practice.
My relationship with technology began in my youth when the first personal computers emerged. My father was an early adopter who enjoyed writing his own programs, and I inherited this fascination. From the beginning, I explored how computers could serve as a new medium for artistic expression—both as a tool and as a source of inspiration. Today, the development of generative AI represents an exciting new frontier in this ongoing exploration.
My latest passion is silversmithing, something I've aspired to learn since childhood. There is much to master, and the process brings me great satisfaction.
Marcel Duchamp remains my most admired artist. His work prioritizes the concept or idea over technical execution—a philosophy that deeply resonates with me. As a Cubist and the creator of the groundbreaking "ready-made" (notably Fountain), he transformed how we understand art itself.
Two central themes drive my work: the experience of urban life and the intimate, often confrontational relationship between humans and the natural world we share with other species. I aim to communicate the sensation of these experiences. Humanity has become something of a burden on this planet, and through my art, I advocate for more thoughtful relationships and greater care for our environment.
I work across multiple media—painting, printmaking, sculpture, and welding—choosing whichever form best expresses these sensations.
